When they closed the colliery, David Jones, a 39-year-old miner from Wales, found himself out of work and on the dole. So after years of taunts in pit showers - jokes from fellow miners impressed by the size of his drill - Jones decided to put his tool to the test. Going even further than The Full Monty, the grey-haired father of two decided to sell his services. For around £50 ($70) an hour, Jones would treat the local Welsh women to a full body massage before introducing them to his own personal pit prop.
Or so he says. When Jones boasted to a skeptical female journalist that he was in fact 'Steve', a well-endowed gigolo who sleeps with up to ten clients a day, Gloria, his wife of 19 years, was less than impressed. "There is just no way he is doing what he says," she told the Mirror newspaper. "He wears the same scruffy jeans every day! I think he's dreaming."
In fact, for many men, the idea of being paid to do what they would pay to do does make for an ideal job, and most guys would swap a valuable body part for the life of Richard Gere in American Gigolo, the film that put male escorts on the map. And opportunities are increasing. With sexual equality almost taken for granted, the world's oldest profession is fast modernising, creating new openings for talented men who know how to show a lady a good time.
"Women are starting to realize that they have just as much right to sexual pleasure as a man," says Jacky, a 31-year-old gigolo from Belgium. "I definitely see a future for gigolos."
But a profession dedicated to pleasing women carries its own particular challenges, and male prostitution may not be the right career choice for every man. While sexual prowess is certainly a requirement, suave sophistication and an ability to both stir and shake are all crucial requirements.
"You do make sure you look your best," explains Jacky, who visits a hairdresser every three days and uses sunbeds to maintain a year-round tan. "You definitely have more success if you walk around in stylish clothing instead of your worn-down jeans. Style and class are very important."
Jacky's career started four years ago when a drunk woman in a nightclub made him an offer most guys think they couldn't refuse. Jacky refused but later reconsidered, and attracted by the money, began placing adverts in magazines. A few months later, he was contacted by a wealthy woman doctor. "The first time I had sex for money was very strange," he recalled. "But in general I didn't have a problem with it."
Today, Jacky's client list includes around 400 women who pay up to $250 for an hour of his attention. While some are single career women, too busy to bother with relationships, many of Jacky's customers are married and visit him with or without the agreement of their husbands. Some are even high class prostitutes hoping to receive the same professional service they provide their customers. Seventy percent of his clients, he says, have never had an orgasm.
"It is well known that most men will have sex with a woman for about ten to fifteen minutes," he explained. "A woman will not get an orgasm from penetration but by stimulation. Most men do not have the patience for that."
In fact, according to many professional men, there's a lot more to being a gigolo than a well-packed toolkit and a Let's Go guide to the erogenous zones. Often clients simply want male company to share dinner and an evening out and consider the bed as an added bonus at the end of a particularly good date.
"Being a gigolo is absolutely and definitely not only about sex," agrees Andre, a 31-year-old Danish gigolo, "It's also about having dinner together, going to the opera together or traveling together. Some women just want entertainment and company when they are on business trips or on holiday."
Above all, he said, with a gigolo "they can be sure to meet a man who puts them at the very center of interest - they can feel like a queen."
For Andre, who boasts a university degree and pierced genitals, entry into the world of male escorts came shortly after his divorce. A female friend suggested that the Scandinavian would make a perfect escort for women who as she put it, were "tired of fishing in muddy waters and taking risks on the one hand - but still interested in male company on the other."
But while Andre currently has no interest in a serious relationship, some gigolos are both professional lovers and proud family men. Jacky for example, has been happily married for four years and has a three-year-old son and two step-daughters. His wife, who runs an erotic massage parlor, supported his decision to move into the sex industry and the couple draw a clear line between their work and home lives by distinguishing between profession and passion.
Despite the difficulties of maintaining their appearance and having to occasionally please older women they may sometimes find less than attractive, both Jacky and Andre say they like their work and plan to continue for at least the foreseeable future.
"I suppose there are jobs which are worse than mine..." mused Jacky.
